Campsites in DevonClick here to search for campsites in Devon. A Campsite Near the SeaDevon, the central county of the Southwest peninsula, is bordered to the North and South by coastline. Its coastlines are among the finest in Britain ranging from superb sand and shingle beaches to rugged, foam-flecked cliffs. The South coast plays host to Torbay and other busy resorts. It is also host to the cities of Exeter and Plymouth. The North coast is quieter and more rugged. There are clusters of excellent family camp sites and caravan parks around the main resorts with other areas hosting mainly quieter sites. A Campsite on the MoorAt the heart of Devon lies Dartmoor which, with over 365 square miles of rugged grandeur, is famous for its beauty, quaint villages, prehistoric remains, and its many peaks and tors. Probably the last largely unspoiled wilderness in Southern England, this is a place of legend and history; a place of peace and quiet to recover from the pace of modern life. Nestling in the fringes of the moors are historic towns, golf courses, wildlife and nature centres, and many other attractions, so there is something for everyone in and around Dartmoor. The National Park authorities do not allow caravans on the high moor, so all the sites on the moor itself are reserved for tents and motorhomes. However, there are many excellent caravan parks on the edges of the moors. Getting to DevonThe main routes into the county are the M5 from the North and the A303/A30 from the East. For the South, follow the A38 Devon Expressway, which runs on from the end of the M5. For the North, follow the A39 from junction 23 or 24 of the M4, or follow the A361 from junction 27 of the M5. At peak times even the motorway becomes congested and visitors may well be advised to travel outside peak times where possible. The county has many steep hills. Each season sees several caravanners stranded with over-heated engines or with burned out clutches. The major motoring organisations recommend that you ensure your car is in good order before any long journey. This is particularly sound advice for those towing caravans or trailer tents in the county.
